Located in North Central Orange County, California, the City of Garden Grove is a small city, about 18 square miles, with a big heart. Garden Grove’s motto is “City of Youth and Ambition”. Garden Grove, just like Visser’s Florist and Greenhouses in Anaheim, CA, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2006. The city was started in 1874 when Garden Grove’s founder, Alonzo Cook, bought a plot of land (160 acres) in what was eventually to become Orange County. He donated part of the land to build the first school and post office, and he named this donated area Garden Grove. For the next 20 years Garden Grove remained an agricultural oriented town, covered with citrus trees and beautiful wild flowers. Then in the early 1900s, the railroad started bringing visitors and tourists and Garden Grove began to blossom. Garden Grove stayed a farming community until after WWII, when cheap land and great weather attracted the returning soldiers and their families and houses began to sprout like weeds. The city was incorporated in June of 1956. Today, Garden Grove is the 18 th biggest city in California, and the fifth biggest in Orange County with approximately 170,000 people. For residents and tourists alike, Garden Grove is a mecca of entertainment. The annual Strawberry Festival is one of the biggest community-oriented Memorial Day events in the United States. Also, the city is approximately 10 miles from John Wayne Airport and very close to Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm. The schools in the Garden Grove Unified School District, are touted among the best in the nation. The City also contains the most churches per person in the state, including the Crystal Cathedral, home of the “Hour of Power” TV program.
